When dieting and exercising aren't enough to address waistline concerns, a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) may be a solution. This surgical procedure removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening and repositioning the abdominal muscles. It’s ideal for those looking to achieve a flatter, firmer stomach. A tummy tuck can also correct diastasis, the vertical separation of abdominal muscles often caused by pregnancy.
General procedure
Abdominoplasty surgery typically lasts between one and five hours, depending on the desired outcome and the patient's individual needs. The procedure begins with a horizontal incision made just above the pubic bone. The skin is then separated from the muscle tissue, and excess skin is removed. The abdominal muscles are tightened to create a flatter, more defined waistline. Afterward, the incision is closed with absorbable sutures, and small steri-strips are applied. In most cases, an additional incision around the navel is made for optimal results.
Recovery Process
Post-operative instructions typically recommend plenty of rest and limited movement to support the healing process. As the body recovers, some swelling and discomfort may occur, which can be managed with prescribed medication. Two drains may be placed to remove excess fluid, and they will be removed within two days to three weeks, depending on the amount of tissue removed. An abdominal binder must be worn for three weeks to help support healing. Most patients can resume normal activities after about two weeks. With proper diet and exercise, the results of the surgery are long-lasting.
