A breast lift, or mastopexy, raises and reshapes sagging breasts for a firmer, more youthful look. Aging, pregnancy, and weight changes can lead to loss of elasticity, causing breasts to droop. This procedure removes excess skin, tightens tissue, and repositions the nipples for a lifted, contoured shape. For added volume, a breast lift can be combined with augmentation to enhance both lift and fullness.
General procedure
A breast lift procedure typically takes about three hours, with techniques varying based on individual needs. The most common approach involves an anchor-shaped incision along the underside of the breast, allowing for excess skin removal and repositioning of the nipple and areola to a higher, more youthful position. The surrounding skin is then reshaped for a firmer, lifted appearance.
For patients with smaller breasts and minimal sagging, less invasive techniques may be an option. One such method, the "doughnut mastopexy," involves circular incisions around the areola to remove excess skin with minimal scarring. Advancements in breast lift techniques now include options with fewer incisions and improved nipple sensation preservation.
If a breast implant is added during the lift, it is placed in a pocket either beneath the breast tissue or under the chest muscle for enhanced volume and shape.
Recovery Process
After surgery, patients are advised to get plenty of rest and limit movement to promote healing and a smooth recovery. A surgical bra will need to be worn for several weeks to support the healing process. Some discomfort is normal but can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. While complications are uncommon, closely following Dr. Rodriguez’s post-operative instructions will help ensure optimal results and a safe recovery.
